How to Keep Your Gutters Clear (and Why You Should)

Clogged gutters lead to roof damage, foundation issues, and pest problems. Here's how often to clean them and how to spot trouble early.

Why it matters

Gutters exist to move water away from your roof and foundation. When they clog with leaves and debris, water backs up under roof shingles, spills down your siding, and pools near your foundation — all of which cause damage that's far more expensive than routine cleaning.

How often to clean them

Twice a year is a good baseline: once in late spring after trees finish flowering, and once in late fall after leaves have dropped. If you have a lot of overhanging trees, check more often — every season isn't excessive.

Signs your gutters need attention

Water spilling over the sides during rain, sagging or pulling-away sections, plants growing in the gutter, and staining on your siding below the gutter line are all signs it's time to clear them out — or that they need repair.

Doing it safely

Use a sturdy ladder on level ground, work with a helper if possible, and clear debris with a small trowel or gutter scoop before rinsing with a hose. If your home is more than two stories, or you're not comfortable on a ladder, it's worth hiring this one out.
